Choose an assistant for research and first drafts

Writers, operators and small teams comparing general-purpose assistants.

Start with the documents you produce, not a model leaderboard. A customer response, a research brief and an internal operating procedure need different levels of sourcing, context and review. List the inputs you can safely share, the format of the final document, and the person responsible for approving it.

Build a small comparison set from work you understand well. Include a straightforward task, an ambiguous request and a question whose answer is not present in the supplied material. A useful assistant should make gaps apparent rather than confidently completing the story. Open cited sources yourself and check that they support the specific statement, not merely the surrounding topic.

For writing, compare the edited result. Track how much text you remove, how often you restore your preferred tone, and whether the assistant preserves names, numbers and qualifications. A fluent first draft is not automatically a cheaper finished document. Existing workspace context may matter more than extra output formats.

Review data handling before adding company material. Confirm the vendor's current retention, training-use and workspace-permission terms for the exact plan under consideration. Then check current limits, billing periods and whether a trial meets your test requirements. Keep final factual and legal review with a responsible person.
